Microsuction is a gentle way to remove ear wax using a small, low-pressure suction device and a bright, magnified view. There’s no water and no poking about — I can see exactly what I’m doing the whole time, which makes it precise and reassuring.
It’s widely regarded as the gold-standard method, and most people find it completely comfortable. Because it doesn’t flush water into the ear, it suits sensitive ears, perforated eardrums and people who’ve had ear surgery, where other methods often can’t be used.

I examine your ear with a small camera and show you what’s going on inside on the screen.

Using magnification and a fine suction tip, I lift the wax away — you’ll hear a soft suction sound, that’s all.

Does microsuction hurt?
Most people find it very comfortable and well-tolerated. You’ll hear a soft suction sound, and I check you’re comfortable at every step. We go entirely at your pace.
Is microsuction better than syringing?
Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold standard because it’s done under direct vision with no water, so it’s gentle and precise. Water irrigation is still useful for firmer wax, and I’ll use whichever is right for your ears.
Safety & suitability
Gentle for most — but honest about who should check first
Ear wax removal is very safe in trained hands, but no procedure is entirely risk-free. Occasionally people notice brief dizziness, a little temporary discomfort, or a faint ringing that quickly settles. I’ll always talk you through this first and stop the moment you want me to.
Please mention it before we start if you have:
- A known perforated eardrum, or grommets/ear-surgery in the past 12 months
- A current ear infection, discharge, or significant ear pain
- Recent dizziness, vertigo or sudden hearing loss
- Only one hearing ear, or a history of complications after wax removal
