The complete guide
A plain-English guide to DS Microsuction — what I do, what it costs, where I cover, how to prepare, and answers to the questions people ask me most.
DS Microsuction is a mobile ear wax removal service in Bude, Cornwall, run by Deanna Spiby. Deanna offers gentle microsuction and water irrigation at your own home across Bude, Holsworthy, Launceston & surrounding areas — she comes to you, so there’s no clinic to travel to. Treatment is £70 for one or both ears, or £30 if no wax needs removing. Booking is online or by phone on 07539 663189.
Ear wax removal is very safe in trained hands, but no procedure is entirely risk-free. Occasionally people notice brief dizziness, a little temporary discomfort, or a faint ringing that quickly settles. I’ll always talk you through this first and stop the moment you want me to.
I’m trained and insured in ear wax removal, but I’m not a doctor and I don’t diagnose medical conditions. If I see anything that should be looked at — an infection, or symptoms that aren’t wax — I’ll tell you honestly and recommend you see your GP or an ENT specialist.
Please mention it when you book if you have: a known perforated eardrum, or grommets/ear-surgery in the past 12 months; a current ear infection, discharge, or significant ear pain; recent dizziness, vertigo or sudden hearing loss; only one hearing ear, or a history of complications after wax removal.
Microsuction is a gentle method of removing ear wax using a small, low-pressure suction device while I look directly into your ear under bright magnification. There’s no water and no poking about, so I can see exactly what I’m doing the whole time. It’s widely regarded as the gold-standard method.
Water irrigation uses a gentle, controlled flow of warm water to flush wax away. It’s the modern, far gentler successor to the old ‘ear syringing’ — the pressure is controlled and comfortable, and I only use it after checking your ear is suitable. Often I’ll start with microsuction and finish with a gentle flush if needed.
DS Microsuction is a mobile ear wax removal service in Bude, Cornwall, run by Deanna Spiby. Deanna is a former carer who trained in microsuction and ear wax removal, and now offers gentle home-visit appointments across Bude, Holsworthy, Launceston and the surrounding villages — she comes to you.
Not always. Ear wax is healthy and self-cleaning for most people. It’s only worth removing when it builds up enough to block the ear, dull your hearing, cause discomfort, or get in the way of a hearing aid or a proper look at the eardrum. If you book and there’s nothing that needs treating, I’ll tell you — and you’ll only pay the smaller check fee.
Common signs include muffled or reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness or blockage, mild earache, ringing (tinnitus), itchiness, or hearing aids whistling. These can have other causes too, so if symptoms persist after wax is cleared, see your GP.
Most people find it very comfortable and well-tolerated. With microsuction there’s no water and no poking — you’ll hear a soft suction sound, that’s all. I check you’re comfortable at every step and we go entirely at your pace.
Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold-standard, gentle method for removing ear wax, and I’m trained and insured to carry it out. I always examine your ears first and only proceed when it’s the right choice for you. No procedure is entirely risk-free, so I’ll talk you through everything first and stop the moment you ask.
It’s very safe in trained hands, but occasionally people notice brief dizziness, a little temporary discomfort, or a faint ringing that quickly settles. The suction can sound loud up close. I keep sessions gentle and unhurried, and I’ll always check how you’re feeling as we go.
I’ll take extra care, or sometimes suggest you see your GP first, if you have a known perforated eardrum, grommets or ear surgery in the last 12 months, a current ear infection or discharge, significant ear pain, recent dizziness or sudden hearing loss, or only one hearing ear. None of these automatically rule you out — just mention them when you book.
Microsuction can often be suitable where water-based methods aren’t, because it doesn’t flush water into the ear. But a perforation needs care, so please tell me when you book and I’ll assess it first and only proceed if it’s safe to do so.
No. I’m trained and insured in ear wax removal, but I’m not a doctor and I don’t diagnose medical conditions. If I see signs of an infection, or symptoms that aren’t wax, I’ll tell you honestly and recommend you see your GP or an ENT specialist.
£70 for one or both ears — it’s the same price whether one ear or both need doing. If I look and there’s no wax that needs removing, it’s just £30 for the ear-health check. There’s no extra charge for me coming to you.
Because you should only pay for what you actually need. If your ears are clear, there’s nothing to remove — so you just pay the £30 check fee rather than the full treatment price. I’d always rather be honest than treat ears that don’t need it.
You pay on the day — there’s no online payment to make when you book. I accept cash and card.
No — I’m a fully mobile service, so a home visit is just the standard price. You’re not charged extra for me coming to you within my normal coverage area.
No. It’s £70 for treatment (one or both ears) or £30 if there’s no wax to remove. There are no booking fees and no surprise add-ons.
You can book online in under a minute, or call or text me on 07539 663189 if you’d like a chat first. I’ll confirm your time and send a reminder of how to prepare.
Usually around 30 minutes. I never rush — I’ll talk you through everything, take a careful look, remove any wax, and show you the difference afterwards.
Often, yes. I offer evening and weekend appointments as well as daytime ones, and I can frequently fit in urgent blockages quickly. Call or text me and I’ll find a time that works.
Yes — and it’s the same £70 price whether it’s one ear or both.
First I’ll look inside your ear with a small camera and show you what’s going on, on a screen. Then, if there’s wax to remove, I’ll gently clear it with microsuction or water irrigation, checking you’re comfortable throughout. Afterwards I’ll show you your ear again so you can see it’s clear.
Yes. Home visits are a big part of what I do. I bring everything I need with me and set up calmly, so you can have the whole thing done from your own armchair — ideal if you’re elderly, housebound, looking after young children, or simply short on time.
I cover Bude, Holsworthy, Launceston and the surrounding areas for home visits, including the villages in between. If you’re not sure whether you’re in my area, just call or text — I may still be able to help or point you in the right direction.
No — I’m a fully mobile service, so there’s no clinic to travel to. I come to you at home across Bude, Holsworthy, Launceston and the surrounding villages, bringing everything I need with me.
I cover a wide area around Bude, Holsworthy and Launceston, including many smaller villages. The quickest way to check is to call or text me on 07539 663189 — if you’re just outside, I’ll always try to help.
For the best possible results, use olive oil 2–3 times a day for 3–5 days before your appointment — Earol Olive Oil Spray is ideal, as its spray bottle delivers the oil straight into the ear canal quickly and effectively. This softens the wax, making it easier and more comfortable to remove and reducing the chance of needing a second appointment. If you need an urgent appointment, treatment can still go ahead, but very hard or impacted wax may need a follow-up visit to clear completely. Please don’t use cotton buds — they tend to push wax further in.
Yes — a few drops of olive oil (or an olive-oil ear spray like Earol) two or three times a day for several days beforehand softens the wax beautifully and makes removal gentler and quicker. If you can’t, don’t worry — I’ll still take a look.
Usually nothing special. Your ears may feel a little more ‘open’ for a day or two. I’ll give you any aftercare advice you need on the day, and I’m always happy to answer questions afterwards.
Cotton buds tend to push wax deeper and pack it against the eardrum, which can make blockages worse and occasionally cause damage. The ear is largely self-cleaning — if wax does build up, gentle professional removal is far safer.
It varies a lot from person to person. Some people never need it; others — including hearing-aid users and people who naturally produce more wax — find a check every 6–12 months helpful. There’s no need to do it routinely if your ears feel fine.
Yes — I’m told I’m especially gentle and patient with little ones. I show children the camera and the ear model so it feels more like show-and-tell than a procedure, and we never rush. Several of my reviews are from parents of children as young as seven.
Absolutely — this is one of the things home visits are most valued for. I’m experienced with older clients, including people living with dementia, and I bring a calm, unhurried approach to every visit.
Yes, and you’re far from alone. A lot of people feel anxious beforehand. Seeing inside your own ear on the screen first tends to put people at ease, and we go entirely at your pace — I’ll stop the moment you want me to.
